Oy! We’re down for a while, and all kinds of things pop up in the food world!
Our good friend Stephanie Izard, winner of Season 4’s Top Chef on Bravo, now has a sweet little video blog called Tasty Life where she presents everything from cheese to pork! Her latest episode shows how Wilbur goes from farm to fried. Certainly not for the faint of heart! Check it out!
If you missed our Daily Blender exclusive interview with Stephanie shortly after she won the Season 4 competition, you can read it here.

Serious Eats reminded us today that our favorite Bravo TV Top Chef judge, Mr. Tom Colicchio, will be on tonight’s Charlie Rose. If you haven’t had a chance to catch a Charlie Rose interview before, I urge you to check out the recent Ferran Adrià interview. Adrià, along with his go-to guy, José Andrés, both give wonderful insight into the world of avant garde cooking.

Just can’t get enough Top Chef? Bravo has posted a new restaurant finder for all of your viewing pleasure. With picks from Top Chef judges and contestants alike, it seems there’s something for everyone, both nationally and internationally.
Visiting the Manhattan area? Guest judge Chef Eric Ripert recommends Bar Boulud, while Season 1’s Chef Miguel Morales recommends Asiate for a great brunch.
Dallas? Chef Tre Wilcox from Season 3 recommends award-winning French restaurant Aurora.
Paris? Plenty of choices, from Alain Ducasse to La Truffiere, a pick from upcoming Season 5’s Chef Alex Eusebio.
Oregon native Chef Brian Malarkey can even recommend a great restaurant, the Tumalo Feed Company, in Bend, Oregon. Apparently their Rocky Mountain Oysters are not-to-miss.

By now you’ve seen the promos all over Bravo! Our favorite reality culinary competition, Top Chef (and that handsome Tom Colicchio) returns to television on November 12th! This season’s series takes place in New York City, a capital of culinary perfection, and features a whole host of guest judges, including the Foo Fighters, Martha Stewart, and kitchen master Chef Eric Ripert. (Be sure to look for my upcoming post on a recent visit to Le Bernardin and my gracious meeting with Mr. Ripert!)
Can’t wait for November 12th? Our friends over at Gothamist recently posted a full coverage report to this season’s ‘cheftestants’.

Oy! Between the outstanding food and drink at this weekend’s NYC Wine & Food Festival and the early morning flight back to the West Coast, I’m beat! The festival, I have to declare, was a smashing success as well as a fantastic addition to an already established capital of culinary stars. Kudos to festival creator Lee Brian Schrager!
A few of my personal highlights:
- “Do I have chocolate in my teeth?” asked legendary crooner Billy Joel, flashing me his pearly whites while departing last night’s SWEET event. Joel’s beautiful wife, Katie Lee Joel, is the author of The Comfort Table and a former judge on Food Network’s Iron Chef America.
- “Can I have yours?” answered adorable Mark Simmons from Bravo’s Top Chef Season 4 when I asked for his autograph. (Hey, you never know when today’s eliminated chef becomes tomorrow’s celebrity chef – and he’s adorable! Did I mention that?) Simmons was enjoying the atmosphere at Saturday night’s Macy’s Culinary Council Star Party.
- “Oh, you don’t want his autograph!” teased The FN Dish host Bruce Seidel as Bobby Flay put pen to paper for a fan.
- “I thought he was a bit of a bastard,” laughed famed El Bulli chef Ferrán Adrià referring to friend, and “Decoding Ferrán Adrià” documentarian, chef Anthony Bourdain, who calls the menu at El Bulli “shock effect food” in his bestseller, Kitchen Confidential. On tour to promote his new book, A Day at El Bulli, Adrià and Bourdain spoke at Saturday’s TimesTalk with Eric Asimov.
Stay tuned to Daily Blender for more of my favorite moments from this weekend’s festival!

You may recognize her from her win on this season’s Top Chef, but Chef Stephanie Izard has been cultivating culinary success since her early years. Stephanie was kind enough to sit down to answer a few questions on where she’s been and where’s she’s headed. Heck, she’s even joined the blogging ranks these days!
Q: You originally graduated from University of Michigan with a degree in Sociology. How did you end up in the culinary world?
A: Grew up loving to cook and when I did not find anything I loved better in college I decided to become a chef.
Q: Who would you consider to be your culinary inspirations?
A: So many really. Growing up was a mix of my mom, “Yan Can Cook” and Julia Child. Now some of my favorite chefs are [Mario] Batali and Jose Andres.
Q: What are your favorite ingredients to cook with?
A: I most often use various nuts, fruits and olives. Great flavors and textures.
Q: Where are your favorite spots for a good meal?
A: San Soo Gab San is my favorite Korean BBQ. Just tasty and fun which is what I like in a restaurant.
Q: Who’s your dream sous chef?
A: Not in a cocky way, but a mini me so I knew that we had the same taste and the same vision. Though I would probably fire myself for my bad taste in music in the kitchen.
Q: What can people expect to find at your new restaurant?
A: Great food and a fun beer and wine list. And of course, bacon.
Q: What have you learned about running a successful restaurant that you hope to incorporate into your new restaurant?
A: The importance of a fun and enthusiastic staff. Make a fun environment so they want to come to work and want to work hard for you. And show them the respect that you want from them.
Q: Would you consider hiring any of your Top Chef-mates?
A: I think we will all go on to do great things on our own. A lot of talent but very different styles.
Q: Will you be making an appearance on Top Chef Junior?
A: Not sure. They may get me confused with the kids since I am probably the same height.
A big thanks to Chef Stephanie and the folks at Bravo!
