Vegas Uncorkd
The Daily Blender staff had such a great time at the 2008 New York Wine & Food Festival that we just couldn’t wait to get ourselves to the 2009 Vegas Uncork’d event!

Kicking off this Thursday with a champagne toast hosted by Bon Appetit’s Editor-in-Chief Barbara Fairchild and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, the Vegas Uncork’d show looks to be a blast!

Follow our live coverage of the weekend’s events here at Dailyblender.com and via our Twitter feed. We’re even introducing a new Las Vegas Daily Blender correspondent! Could it get anymore exciting!?

Some of the events we’re attending include:

  • Thursday’s after-hours cocktail reception at the Caesar’s Palace PURE nightclub, benefiting Three Square, southern Nevada’s only food bank, featuring chefs Cat Cora, recent James Beard Award winner Paul Barolotta, Rick Moonen, and Kerry Simon.
  • Cocktails & Cuisine at the Wynn, hosted by Bon Appetit’s Wine & Spirits Consultant, Steven Olson, and celebrity mixologist, Tony Abou-Ganim.
  • The Grand Tasting at Caesar’s Palace featuring 150 top chefs and spirit mavens!
  • And, perhaps the big event we’re most looking forward to -  the Celebrity Chef Blackjack Tournament, at the Wynn’s Encore! Hosted by actor Kyle MacLachlan, the players list includes a number of our favorite celebrity chefs – Tom Colicchio, Daniel Boulud, Rick Moonen, Bobby Flay, Carla Pelligrino, François Payard, and Joël Robuchon, among many others.

Bon Appetit’s BA Foodist Andrew Knowlton, who’ll also be attending this weekend’s events, chimed in earlier this week with his favorite Uncork’d picks as well.

City Harvest Thanks Eric Ripert, Rachel Ray

Eric Ripert, Sandra Ripert, Rachel Ray @ Cipriani

Writer Bret Thorn at Nation’s Restaurant News noted yesterday that one of our favorite chefs, Eric Ripert, was recently honored at a gala event in New York City for his work with City Harvest.

Held at Cipriani in Manhattan, Ripert, Rachel Ray, and other contributors were recognized for their efforts to combat the hunger crisis through support of City Harvest. Chef Ripert personally pledged to donate $1 to City Harvest for each individual who dined at Le Bernardin. He also helped to raise an additional $45,000 by offering to provide a private dinner for 26 guests – an item available for bid during the event’s live auction.

The gala raised nearly $1 million dollars that will go towards the efforts of City Harvest, a non-profit organization that arranges pickup and distribution of restaurant food stuffs that would otherwise go to waste.

Way to go Chef Ripert!

Food Banks In Need of Your Assistance

February 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

This month, I’m participating in the Blog for Food campaign supporting the Oregon Food Bank, a network of 915 hunger-relief agencies throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. According to a recent report, the need for emergency food is skyrocketing in this volatile economy. With requests at record levels, and donations well below previous years, local food bank organizations, both here in Oregon and across the country, are in need of your assistance.

“Layoffs, foreclosures and other economic disruptions are taking a terrible toll on our neighbors,” commented Rachel Bristol, executive director and CEO of Oregon Food Bank.

Throughout the month of February, I’ll be displaying the Blog for Food logo within my posts. By clicking on the logo, you’ll be transported (magically, of course!) to the Oregon Food Bank page where you can donate to the cause. Be sure to note the “Blog for Food” drive on your donations.

Help build your community by helping your neighbors during their time of need!

In recognition of today’s National Day of Service, our friends at Share Our Strength are asking for your help to continue to fight hunger problems throughout the nation. Their newest campaign, “Operation No Kid Hungry” will continue to help raise funds for childhood hunger, encouraging communities to hold food drives for those in need within their own neighborhoods.

How can you get involved?

Share Our Strength has partnered with AT&T to offer two great ways that you can support and participate in “Operation No Kid Hungry”:

1. Donate by text! From now until March 1st, simply text “SHARE” to 20222 on your mobile phone and donate $5 to our fight to end childhood hunger in America. AT&T will match all text donations up to $100,000. Help us meet this challenge grant! You can find out more here.

2. Hold a food drive! Beginning January 19th, a national day of community service, help feed those in need by holding your own community food drive. Visit Share Our Strength to find a food bank and a list of the most needed nutritious foods.
